How you effectively manage Change in your team is an important element of who you are as a leader. Change is an important and constant part of the business world. It carries with it an element of risk. You need to be able to manage that uncertainty yourself, whilst also helping your team do the same.
But not everyone has the ability to manage change well. For some, it can leave them feeling uncertain and insecure. Others may even resist it, especially when it comes to changing roles and embracing new ideas. It’s important though, that all team members know how to manage Change, but it isn’t always easy for them.
Both you and your team need to learn how to effectively manage Change. If you don’t, it can lead to a decrease in productivity, demotivated team members. It can also lead to a team that is unwilling to accept and put in place new ideas. So how can you manage Change in your team?
It starts with clear communication. You may not be happy with changes taking place, but you can be optimistic and positive – and you should. Not only does it help to stay in constant touch with your team during times of change. It is also needed to reassure them that you are there for them.
Set clear expectations and goals
Define the Change and how it aligns with the goals of your business and/or team. Set a clear expectation of what’s going to happen and have a plan in place, so everyone can understand the end goal. Communicate clear understanding of your expectations and the timescales involved is helpful. It’s only by clarifying what you are expecting of your team, that you’ll help them understand the role they play in it all.
Give your team time to put Change in place
Fast changes can leave your team struggling to keep up in new uncharted waters. Ensure you are giving them time to both put Change in place and adjust to Change. Set reasonable timescales and targets for your team. Let them know that they may need to work harder or for extra time. If they know how long this you are expecting them to do this, they’ll be more on-board and willing to help.
Involve everyone to effectively manage Change
Everyone in your team plays a part in any change, regardless of whether it impacts them . Involve everyone. Ask for feedback on what’s happening and how they’re progressing. Let them know you’re open to suggestions and ensure they report in with you.
Let every team member know how changes will affect them, as well as how they can contribute. Involving everyone isn’t about getting them all on board. It’s more about ensuring they’re involved, included and feel a part of those changes.
Finally, ensure your team have the support they need, during times of change. You will see less resistant to Change and bolster confidence in times of uncertainty. Establish what sort of support would benefit them most. This could include counselling, mentor-ship, open-door policy, and extra training. Take steps to provide the right support options.
