In this post, I will share what inspired me to start my own freelance business. I will talk about my journey and introduce you to my formula for success. I will convey how you can do the same. If you are not enjoying your full-time work and looking to become your own boss, this post is for you.
I am dwelling on my earliest memories of what I wanted to do when I grew up, it was always that I wanted to be a teacher. I had some great teachers at school, and they had inspired me to want to pay it forward. When I became a teenager and realised how difficult the youthful years could be, I was changing my mind. I was then going to be a lawyer or work in a bank. So, after a few years working as a clerical assistant in various organisations, I got my first job in a Bank in 1976. I reached my dream job.
What was my journey like in the Corporate world?
I was enjoying working in that environment. I remember as a junior typist going into the branch manager’s office to take dictation. That was how it was back then. Daily, I took notes by shorthand and then typed up letters on the old manual typewriter. After a decade in the branches, I was transferred into Head Office and was now working as an Executive Assistant in Marketing.
A few years later I got my first break out of the so-called “Secretarial” post to work as a team member in Human Resources. I was very happy with this type of project work as I am an organiser. The job entailed organising several training events. After a few years, I became a Team manager which was quite an achievement for me, and I enjoyed the job and the responsibilities. It also gave me an opportunity to travel. I was also enjoying the collaboration with the external facilitators who were supporting the programmes.
The change to start a freelance business
I was not feeling that being a team manager was my forte. The team was spread over different locations. Management of the team brought challenges with varying personalities. I was not favouring the journey between two sites. Due to the workload, I was working at home out of hours. I found it tough to manage boundaries. I was feeling that I was always working. Also, it was a time when I was dealing with family members’ health issues which necessitated travel abroad. This took a toll on me. I was loathing asking to take time off from work.
To add to this, I was not feeling appreciated at work for the level of work I was investing in the job. I was feeling discouraged and wanted to feel in control of my time. I was loving the job and I wanted to do this for myself. If you are in this situation, I am empathising with you. I was dreading the journey into Central London on packed trains. I was working from home two days a week, and this helped but it was not enough. When there were some major internal changes in the team, I was feeling this was the right time to change direction.
What was the Aha moment for me
I was desiring a different challenge being unsure of what this was. Being good at my job and loving what I was doing, the search started. If I could only continue to do this and work for myself that would be ideal. My friend shared what a virtual assistant was, but I did not understand how that would work. It was in 2014 when I visited the Office Show and stopped by the stall of VACT that the aha moment came. I was intrigued by the idea of being a virtual assistant I wanted to get to it straight away.
My actions to start a freelance business
Afterward, I signed up. I got the training needed. I was thrust into getting my business off the ground. By the way, please read my ebook “How to Transition from Full-Time Work to Being Your Own Boss”. In the book, I give you the formula about what I did to make this a reality. Why did I write an e-book?
I wrote this e-book “How to Transition from Full-Time Employee to be your own boss” because my friends and acquaintances often asked me how I started my business. They wanted to know what steps I took whilst I was working full-time. If I had a penny for the number of times someone asked me this question, I would be a millionaire by now. These steps worked for me. I want to impart this information with anyone who is desiring to start a freelance business. It can be alarming. So, when you have a full-time job and you have a secure income coming in, it can be daunting. If you read my book, it will help you to get motivated and start to fuel the passion to get cracking.
